Funeral services for Arvid J. "Shorty" Larsen, 86, of Norfolk will be at 10:30 a.m., Staurday, February 25, 2012 at Home for Funerals, Norfolk: Reverend Dr. James Brewer will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Norfolk, military rites by the United States Navy Honor Guard, American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 1644. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Home for Funerals, Norfolk, Nebraska.
Shorty died Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at Faith Regional Health Services.
Shorty was born July 14, 1925 in Madison, NE to Louis and Geannie (Moore) Larsen. He attended school in Madison and left in his senior year to enlist in the Navy during WWII. He served from October 15, 1943 to April 12, 1946 when he was honorably discharged. He received his High School Diploma from Madison High School in 2001.
Shorty and Betty Ross were married from 1946 to 1958 and 6 children were born to this union.
In 1967 Shorty went to work for the Norfolk Public Schools. He retired in 2007 after 40 years. For 2 more years Shorty continued to pick up the mail for the schools on his own time. On February 27, 1980 Shorty and Mary E. Holmes were married. He welcomed her six children as his own and often said "he and Mary had six children on their wedding night".
Shorty loved to fish, attend horse races and visit with friends and family over coffee and biscuits at Cubby's. He really loved the people at the Norfolk Public Schools Central Office and Maintenance Shop. He will always be remembered for his unlimited generosity and goodwill.
Shorty is survived by his and Betty's children, Geannie Larsen of Colorado, Randy Larsen of Arizona, Rosemary McCauley of Montana, Danny Larsen of Colorado, Kim Larsen of Colorado, his and Mary's children Danny (Renee) Holmes of Clinton, IA, Eugene (Deanna) Klabenes of Humble, TX, Debbie Steele of Maxwell, IA, Kelly Schramm of Norfolk, Missy (Larry) Bohlken of Norfolk, 1 brother Carley Larsen, 12 grandchildren, 18 step-grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 18 step great-grandchildren.
Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary on November 21, 1986, his and Betty's son Arvid Leroy Larsen, his and Mary's daughter Lisa Downie and 8 brothers and sisters.
