Harry was the youngest son of Curtis Reed and Augusta Lydia Ripley. He was born deaf and mute, and despite this handicap- was very successful.He graduated from Gallaudet University with a BA Degree in June of 1883. He married Dora Edna Andrews on December 25, 1883. They had two children, Edgar (1885-1851) and Clara (1889-??). He spent most of his life in the employ of the government printing office in Washington DC. He was one of the first to operate a linotype machine and is considered a pioneer of linotype. He also is credited as one of the founders of the Oshkosh School for the Deaf.
