At birth, he was named Leland Barkdull Kellogg. His father, who was a businessman, wanted him to change his name to Robert Barkdull Kellogg, Jr. because he thought it'd look nice on his store sign, but his son was never interested in running the business. Instead, he became a sailor. He served in both WWI and WWII. After World War I, he served in the naval service for 8 more years.

His sailor mates called him Bub while his family members affectiontally called him Bart.

He dropped the Jr. status after his father died, however, his military records consistently shows Robert B. Kellogg, Jr. He named his son Robert Barkdull Kellogg, who was also Jr.

Robert Barkdull Kellogg served in both wars WWI and WWII in the navy. He was a military man through and through. He really had a strong sense of duty to defend our country.

At the beginning of WWII, in 1939, he was working at Buzzards Point Potomac Electric Company and lived on a yacht on the Potomac River. The yacht had formerly belonged to some senator. Right after the attack on Pearl Harbor, sensing a strong sense of duty, he told his boss that he'll be back after the war, went home and put on his naval suit which still fit, and went to the naval office. He asked for a ship and he did get one. He commanded a ship until the war ended.

After WWII, Bub decided to stay in the service until his motorcycle accident in Washington forced him to retire. His mother died five months later.

He married three times.
1) Pauline Creswell, of Lucas Co. Ohio, who later remarried to __ Vantine/VanTyne. No children.
2) Irma Rutan, of California. They had 2 children, a son Robert B. Kellogg (III/Jr.) and a daughter Barbara Jean Kellogg.
3) Florence...(she was Mrs. Brewster when she married him.).
