Alice, the youngest of 4 children, was born to her mother when she was 40. She grew up in Grand Rapids and attended University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and studied English. Her best college friend was Margaret (Towsley) Dow, whose husband started Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan. Alice met her future husband Frederick Martin Phelps, Jr. in college and married him on Nov. 3, 1928. They spent two years in Maine. Alice, pregnant with her second child, and her daughter moved back to Grand Rapids to live with her mother Rose Bush Kellogg. Her husband returned to Michigan after he finished teaching at Colby College. They lived in the same house for several years during the Great Depression years. They had two children.
In 1942, they moved to Spokane, Washington where they made their home for the next 25 years. After Fred retired, they made Orcas Island, just off Puget Sound, north of Seattle, their home for the next 25 years. In their last few years of life, they moved back to Michigan after living in Washington State for 50 years.
Alice was an excellent correspondent and wrote the most interesting stories through letters. All her grandchildren loved reading her letters, they were written so well. She knew how to knit. She knitted socks for the soldiers during World War I. She once made mittens and hats for all the grandchildren. She knew how to sew too and made clothes for herself. She enjoyed gardening. She was once a Camp Fire girl and loved camping and being outdoors.
