Herbert Samuel Pillsbury was born 28 Sep 1881 in Spirit Lake, IA to parents, Wilbur Fisk Pillsbury and Emily Clara Dicken Pillsbury. He married Alma Nicoline Thorson 18 Jun 1913 in St. Paul, Ramsey Co, MN. They had two children, Marjory and Wilbur. Later in their marriage they separated and Herbert lived for a few years in a hotel in downtown Minneapolis.

Herbert worked for a number of years as the credit manager and bookkeeper for Martin Bros. Clothing Company, which was owned and operated by his sister, Nellie's husband, Charles Martin. Herbert had a partially paralyzed right arm that his grandson Richard Ferris remembers as being a significant disability.

Herbert was buried at Lakewood 28 Jun 1966.
