Martin L. Salm Sr., 76, a life-long Chilton area farmer and Catholic lay leader, died Saturday at Calumet Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 28, 1904, in Chilton, a son of John and Katherine Juckem Salm.
His marriage to Eva Birkholz took place Nov. 7, 1921, at Jericho. Mrs. Salm died Jan. 29, 1974.
On Nov. 27, 1975, he married Florence McGrath at Chilton. The couple lived at 44 Baldwin St., Chilton.
Mr. Salm farmed in the Town of Chilton until retirement in 1972 and was a national director of the Rural Life Organization. A member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton, he was active in the St. Joseph Society and Knights of Columbus. He was a Knight of St. Sylvestor. Green Bay Diocese (Guardian of the Bishop). Mr. Salm was also a member of the Chiltons Lions Club and the Calumet County Alcoholics Anonymous Association.
Surviving are his wife; seven daughters, Mrs. Arvin (Dorothy) Halbach and Mrs. Melvin (Margaret) Reinl, both of Chilton, Sister Bernadette of Muskeeo. Mrs. Ronald (Theresa) Weed of Sterling Heights, Mich., Mrs. Richard (Frances) Manning of Eugene, Oregon, Mrs. Perry (Barbara) Wood of Mankato, Minn, and Mrs. Gary (Mary) Bartels of Milwaukee; eight sons, John of Chilton, Vincent of Rockford, III., Martin Jr. of Brillion, William of Lake wood, Ohio, Lawrence of Holbrook, Mass., Edgar of Valders, Ray of Fond du Lac, and Louis of Fort Collins, Colo.; one step- son, Patrick McGrath of Sparta, N.J. ; 65 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Peter Lorenz of Little Chute and Mrs. Math Weber of Chilton and a brother Hugo of Chilton.
Two sisters and five brothers preceded him in death.
A concelebrated funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Chilton. The Rev. Paulinus Kraemer of Chilton will be primary celebrant, assisted by the Rev. Steven Halbach of Green Bay, the Rev. Martin Simon of Plymouth and the Rev. Anton Birdsall of Hilbert. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Family rites will precede the Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Wieting Funeral Home in Chi- a.m. with a parish vigil at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
