Russell grew up in Madison and graduated from Madison High School and General Beadle College. In 1969 he received his master's degree in education from South Dakota State University. He married Monica Hanson in Bridgewater on December 2, 1966.
He taught school in Woolsey, Warner, and Wakonda, was an auctioneer for Mickelson Real Estate Company in Yankton and was director of the Yankton Senior Citizens Center for nine years.
Russell was a past state governor of the Toastmasters Club, and at the time of his death was the exalted ruler of the Yankton Elks Lodge.
Russell and Monica had two daughters, both still living.
He died suddenly in his home in Yankton. Funeral services were held in the Ray Funeral Chapel.
