"The death of Melvin D. Kane, a native and life-long resident of the Fly Creek area and operator for many years of that village's famous cider mill, occurred Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home there following an extended illness. Mr. Kane was 83 years of age. Born in Fly Creek Valley on November 21, 1865, he was a son of John and Myrette (Hyde) Kane. On July 4, 1885 he married Miss Mary E. Thurston at Cooperstown. He was the last survivor of a family of eight children. Mr. Kane was a farmer by occupation and also operated the Fly Creek cider mill for many years. He was a member of Fly Creek Grange. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lynn Kane of Fly Creek and Fred Kane of Mohawk; a daughter, Mrs. Jesse Richards of Phoenix Mills; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews ...
