William A. Van Deveer Longtime Creighton Resident Passes Away

One of Creighton's oldest and best known residents, William A. Van Deveer, passed away Friday morning in a Norfolk hospital where he had been a patient for the preceding five days. He had resided in and near Creighton for 36 years and was active in church and civic affairs for many years.

Obituary
William A. Vandeveer was born in Warren County, Ill., near Roseville on January 8, 1858, and departed from this life November 27, 1942, at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 19 days. He was the son of Absalom and Delilah Vandeveer and grew to young manhood near his birthplace.

Here he was married to Betty Van Kirk on December 27, 1884. To this union three children were born; Mae, Dent A. and Delilah Marjorie, who died in infancy. The Vandeveers celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 27, 1933.

In 1886 he moved with his family to Richardson County, Nebraska, where he purchased a farm. In 1907 they moved to Creighton where he bought a farm south of town [from his brother-in-law Henry Van Kirk*]. In 1925 they came to town, where they resided [at what is now 701 Cherry Street*] until his death.

Mr. Vandeveer was converted and baptized when a young man and joined the Baptist church. He was an active worker in the church all of his life. On last Sunday evening he sat in his chair at home humming familiar old hymns. It was his custom to close each day with prayer.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife of Creighton; one daughter, Mrs. T.H. Winfrey, Stella, Nebr., one son, D.A. Van Deveer, Creighton; four grandchildren; Mrs. Paul Loney, Stella, Nebr., L.[Lawrence*] H. Winfrey, Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. Charles (Marjorie) Otradovsky, Creighton and Betty Faye Van Deveer, Creighton; five great grandchildren, Jimmie and Mary Ann Winfrey, Allen and Mae Beth Loney and Betty Lou Otradovsky. Also two sisters, Mrs. Donna Ray, Chicago and Mrs. Dr. Pitman, Galesburg, Ill. and many friends.

Mr. Van Deveer was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held from the home at 1:45 p.m. and from the Federated church at 2 o'clock Sunday with Rev. Paul Sawtelle of Fremont and Rev. G. Basil Anderson officiating.

The following served as pallbearers: Clyde Green, Charles Iauch, Clad Britt, Roscoe Rice, J.P. Nielsen and P.W. Wegner. Burial was made in Greenwood cemetery.

Gravesite Details

Compiled by the Creighton Historical Center. William's son Dent changed his name to Van Deveer, and that is the name on William's stone, but William did not spell it that way. William's obituary also spells the name the way Dent spelled it.
