Sturges Penfield was the son of Sgt. John Penfield and Eunice Ogden. His father had been a patriot in the American Revolution.
While a young man he learned the hatter s trade. He married Laura Giddings in Fairfield on the 12th of January, 1806. The pair came directly to Pittsford and resided in a house which stood on the same spot where they ever after lived and where they died. This house was formerly the saddler shop of his brother, John, but it had been removed and fitted up for a dwelling house. His father built him a hat shop which stood five or six rods south of the house, and in this he carried on hat making for some years.
