Oroville Mercury Register, Oroville, CA, Wednesday, Feb 7, 1968, pg 14:

"Herbert H. Bills --- Funeral services for Herbert Harrison Bills, 82, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Scheer Memorial Chapel.

"Mr. Bills, life-long resident of Butte County who lived on Merrimac Star Route, died Tuesday in a local hospital. He was born Feb. 22, 1885, at Bidwell Bar.

"Until his death he was an avid hunter and fisherman, having shot a four-point buck last deer season.

"Before his retirement he had been a self-employed stockman for 50 years. As a very young man he took care of the horses at the Harts Mill stage stop and when he was 18 years old he ran his own freight line hauling merchandise to stores in the mountain areas of Butte and Plumas counties.

"Then before starting his cattle business, he was engaged for several years in hauling logs.

"He was a charter member of Berry Creek Grange and also affiliated with Butte-Pomona Grange 16.

"Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mabel Bills of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Cecil Hayes of Livermore and Mrs. Claude Kendall of Bayside, Humboldt County; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

"Services will be conducted by the Rev. Wayne E. Williams, minister of First Methodist Church, and interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery."
