According to the obituary of Benjamin and Mary Ekdahl's eldest daughter, Anna S. (Ekdahl) Peterson, the family emigrated from Copenhagen, Denmark, to the United States, in 1871, when she was aged three years. As is inscribed on their gravestone, his first wife, Mary, died in 1876. He then married Christina, with whom he had four children:

Benjamin Ekdahl farmed in Thomas, IL. and died February 22, 1889, in Thomas where he is buried beside his first wife, Mary.
