According to the obituary of Benjamin and Mary Ekdahl's eldest daughter, Anna S. "Annie" (Ekdahl) Peterson, the family emigrated from Copenhagen, Denmark, to the United States, in 1871, when she was aged three years. As is inscribed on their gravestone, Mary, died in 1876. Benjamin married a second time, and had four additional children. He died February 22, 1889, in Thomas, Illinois, and was buried beside his first wife, Mary.
