Bruechert Faces Murder Charge
Defendant Waives Pre-Trial Hearing
William A. Bruechert, 71, of ?11 N. 13th st., was arrained in Municipal Court
late Monday morning on a charge of first degree murder in the death of his
wife.
The body of Bruechert’s wife, Vlasta, __, was found in the kitchen of their
large two-story dwelling Saturday morning. Police said she had been beaten to
death with a hatchet which was found in the sink.
Judge Harold W. Mueller found Bruechert over to Circuit Court after the defendant
waived preliminary hearing through his attorney, Charles P. Brady, of Manitowoc.
No plea was entered.
Bruechert, dressed in a charcoal colored suit with white shirt and tie, nodded
to his attorney when Judge Mueller asked him whether he understood the charge.
Mueller said, “It is my opinion that he does not understand the charge.”
Bruechert was suffering from a nervous condition at the time of his wife’s death
and had been under the care of a doctor for the last year.
Dist. Atty Robert Koutnik who earlier had described the ___ … (line underinked)…
said that Bruechert had entered an institution for mental treatment a year ago.
Koutnik was conferring with circuit Judge Russel E. Hanson of Fond du Lac County
late Monday morning about a trial date in the court. Hanson is being called to
sit in place of Judge F. H. Schlichting of Sheboygan, who is currently on vacation
out of the state. Koutnik indicated that a court appearance would be set as soon
as possible, maybe Tuesday.
Koutnik said that Bruechert had admitted the slaying under questioning but was
vague about details.
Mrs. Bruechert’s body was found by a son-in-law, Max Bauer, who went to the home
about 10 a.m. Saturday to deliver some Christmas tree lights.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bruechert were at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Jens Funeral Home.
The Rev. Roland L. Schwandt officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Robert W. Leroy J. and Donald W. Bruechert, Max J. Bauer, Marvin D.
Musial and Carl Geisler Jr.
