EDWARD S. CROWE

EDWARD CROWE, FORMER PILOT EDITOR, DIES
Published Weekly Paper Here For Many Years; Collapses At Desk Suddenly
Edward S. Crowe, 74, teacher, editor and life-long resident of the county,
died suddenly at his home, 914 St. Clair street, late Wednesday afternoon.
Death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. Crowe was taken ill at the office of his job printing plant on York
street. He had eaten a hearty dinner and did not complain of feeling ill.
Collapsing at his desk in mid-afternoon Mr. Crowe was removed to his home
in an ambulance. He died two hours later.
Funeral Saturday
Funeral services will be held Saturday. The requiem mass will be sung at
the Sacred Heart church at 9 a.m. following services at the home at 8:30.
Interment will be in Evergreen.
Mr. Crowe was born on a farm in Liberty, the son of Michael and Margaret
Crowe. He attended the district school and later came to this city to
enroll in the old north side high school. He pursued his studies after
high school days and secured a life teachers' certificate.
For a period of 18 years he taught schools in Manitowoc and surrounding
counties. He was principal of schools at Mishicot, Abrams and Prentice,
Wis. He also studied law but never practiced.
At the turn of the century Mr. Crowe entered the newspaper business. He
published the St. Nazianz weekly for three years. In 1904 he came to this
city and with A. Elmergreen took over the Manitowoc Pilot, one of the
oldest weekly papers in the state, established by Jere Crowley in 1859.
Democratic Organ
Three years later Mr. Crowe purchased Mr. Elmergreen's interest in the
paper and became editor and sole owner. Democratic in politics, the Pilot
became the official organ of the party in Manitowoc county.
Although close to the councils of the democratic party Mr. Crowe never
sought public office. Through his editorials he kept in close contact
with partisan politics of his 30 years of editorship.
In June, 1932, Mr. Crowe disposed of the Pilot to the Manitowoc Newspapers,
Inc., and the paper was taken over by the Herald-Times. Mr. Crowe continued
the job printing business in the paper's plant on the north side.
Transfer of the Pilot three years ago marked the passing of the last
weekly newspaper in this city. At one time there were six weekly publica-
tions here. The Manitowoc Pilot rose to prominence in the weekly newspaper
field in the days before linotype machines through the editorship of the
late John Nagle, who published the paper for 22 years from 1878 to 1900.
Widow Survives
Survivors are his widow; two daughters, Rosemary and Ellen; two sons,
Harold and William; two brothers, Joseph, Sheboygan, and James, city; and
a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Crowe was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Knights of
Wisconsin and the Holy Name society.
The body was removed to the home this afternoon from the Pfeffer funeral
parlors.
