ARTHUR HAUKOHL

DEATH AFTER TWO DAY ILLNESS
Arthur Haukohl, South Side Business Man, Dead at Age of 28
DEATH AWAKENS WIDE SYMPATHY
The uncertainty of life, the futility of human ambition and the unpitying
degree of fate was never more forcibly illustrated than in the death of Arthur
Haukohl, manager of the Staudt hotel, whose demise followed an illness of but
two days. Mr. Haukohl died at the Holy Family Hospital at 1 o'clock, an operation
performed failing to save his life.
Seldom has the sympathy of the community been so alert or made manifest to so
great a degree as in the closing hours of Mr. Haukohl's battle for life. Among
friends and with the public at large sympathy was swayed with every announcement
from the sick chamber and in the bitterness of deepest sorrow that has come to
those who grieve most there is a deep sense of human tenderness in the widespread
sympathy that has awakened. Mr. Haukohl was 28 years of age, a native of this city
who had spent most of his life here and he was widely known as one of the city's
capable young business men. Mr. Haukohl returned here two years ago from Antigo,
where he had been engaged in the laundry business, to assume charge of the Staudt
hotel at the death of Mr. Staudt and has since been manager of the hotel. He was
married a year ago last Sunday the day upon which he suffered the fatal attack, to
Miss Veta Martens, the wife who, with the mother, Mrs. Staudt, and one step sister
and four step brothers survive, Mrs. J. Spalsbury, sturgeon Bay, Walter Staudt,
Duluth, John, Elmer and Lester of this city.
Mr. Haukohl suffered a sudden attack of illness Sunday evening while with his wife,
he was entertaining a party of friends in celebration of the first anniversary of
their marriage, and he was immediately removed to the hospital for an operation
which, however, proved unavailing to save his life. His condition became rapidly
worse and at 11 o'clock this morning members of the family were summoned and at 1
death came to him. The announcement of Mr. Haukohl's death is a shock to friends.
Decedent was a young man of genial disposition, who made and held friends and he
was popular with all who knew him. He was affiliated with several fraternal orders
and was successful in business.
Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet.
