Injuries Kill Manitowoc Man
Herbert Krause Accident Victim
MANITOWOC - Herbert Krause, 64, of 1430 S. 32nd St., died Friday morning at Holy Family Hospital from injuries received Saturday in a railroad crossing accident on County Trunk T in Ozaukee County, seven miles south of Port Washington.
Krause, a track supervisor for the Chicago and North Western Railroad, alone on the inspection vehicle, was on his return trip from Milwaukee at 8:20 a.m. when he was struck by an auto driven by an Ozaukee county patrolman who was heading home after being on overnight duty.
Inspection Tour
Krause had left Manitowoc Wednesday, July 31, for his regular tour of inspection of the railroad tracks and bed between Manitowoc and Milwaukee. He was thrown 53 feet from the place of impact and the inspection car was tossed 25 feet off the tracks. He suffered five broken ribs, a broken hip and body contusions and abrasions. He was taken to St Alphonsus Hospital, Port Washington, and removed to Manitowoc earlier this week.
He had been an employee of the railroad 42 years. He started in 1926 at Sheboygan as a section man; in 1931 was promoted to section foreman at Manitowoc, and in October, 1954, became track supervisor. he would have reitired next May.
Mr. Krause was born May 21. 1904, at Gillett, son of the late Gustave and Wilhelmina Jeske Krause, and married Isabelle W. Wieck Sept. 23, 1927, at Sheboygan. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way.
Son on Vacation
Survivors include the wife; a son, Roger, of Manitowoc; five brothers, Julius and Rudolph of Appleton, Robert of Sheboygan, Alfred of Wabeno and Elmer of Bellingham, Wash.; a sister. Mrs. Gustie Zill, of White Lake. Wis., and two grandchildren.
Funeral services are tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, with the Rev. Donald T. Stannard officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The son and his wife were en route home Friday from a Canadian vacation-business trip an were expected to arrive at Manitowoc late Friday.
