LOUIS LAWRENCE

Recovery Body from Harbor
Manitowoc Resident, Louis Lawrence, Dead
The body of Louis Lawrence, 67, of 103 North Fifth street, was recovered from
Manitowoc harbor early Thursday morning. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner,
termed the death a suicide.
Richard Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Peterson, 307 North Lake street,
was fishing off the north breakwater when he discovered the body floating nearby.
The boy notified his mother, who telephoned police at 5:40 a.m.
Officers Stuart Wetenkamp and Ernest Walters used a police boat to recover the
body, bringing it to the foot of York street. Dr. Teitgen and Lt. Frank Orchekowski
investigated and notified relatives.
Dr. Teitgen stated that Lawrence had been despondent for some time. He left Maple
Crest sanitorium, Whitelaw, recently without an official release, the doctor stated.
Lawrence's wife is recovering from a fractured limb at Holy Family hospital.
Gottfired Aschenbrenner, 851 North 14th street, told officers that he saw Lawrence
at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. He said the man was leaning against one of the uprights on
the north breakwater.
Mr. Lawrence was born in 1883 at Appleton, Wis. In 1903 (or 05?) he married the
former Miss Mary Leddy and the couple lived in Oshkosh, until 1935. They have made
their home in this city since that time.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Brickley of Duluth, Minn., and
Carol Anne at home; two sons, Robert at home and Jerome of this city; sister, Mrs.
William Esch of Appleton and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Urbanek and Schlei funeral
home, Rev. John Walker officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from Friday evening until the time of services.
