Emma was born on May 6, 1865 in Liberty, Wisconsin, the only daughter of Friedrich Gruetzmacher and Julia Rehbein. After her father's death (burial location unknown), her mother married Frank Braasch, and the family settled in Cato. On April 3, 1888 Emma married William C. Roxien, and they settled in Manitowoc. The couple had no children.
