CHARLES H. SCHROEDER (d. 1944)

Former Member of City Council Killed In a Fall
Charles H. Schroeder, 71, of Manitowoc route 1, former local business man and
ex-alderman, was killed sometime Wednesday by a fall down a 20 foot embankment
along the Soo line tracks about a mile east of Alverno.
Schroeder's body was found at the bottom of the embankment a litte after 8 a.m.
today. Coroner Theodore Teitgen said Schroeder suffered a broken neck and broken
back. He said there will be no inquest. The coroner expressed the opinion death
had occurred around 1 p.m. Wednesday.
A report was made to the sheriff's office about 11 p.m. Wednesday by Marshal
Schroeder of this city, a son, that Mr. Schroeder had been missing from his home
since about 9 a.m. This morning at 8:30 Sheriff Elmer Bergner received a call
from the Hugo Vetter residence, stating that a body had been found along the
tracks near there.
Seen By Train Crew
The crew of a Soo line train noted the body this morning and contacted a section
crew, according to Sheriff Bergner, and the crew contacted Vetter.
When found, the body was tangled in some old fence wire, the sheriff said, and he
added that it is possible Schroeder may have tripped in the wire along the side of
the track.
Schroeder had left his home about three-fourths of a mile west of the Haupt tavern
at Alverno about 9 a.m. yesterday to go to Manitowoc Rapids. He had been seen along
the tracks with his dog about 9:30 a.m. by Mrs. Hugo Vetter, the sheriff said.
Mr. Schroeder, who served eight years on the City Council, three terms as alderman
from the sixth ward and one term as alderman from the fourth ward in the early
1900's, was the first person to supply pasteurized milk in this city after he took
over the old Davis milk depot on 8th street. He operated the milk depot and route
for about 10 years.
Later he took over the operation of a grocery store on Chicago street between 9th
and 10th streets. Six years later he worked at the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing
company and had a small greenhouse on New York avenue. In the 30's he retired and
moved to the home on route 1.
Born in this city March 4, 1873 a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Schroeder,
Charles Schroeder married Miss Abbie Hall of Ringwood, Ill, in Chicago on March 23,
1897. He was a member of the Chickerming lodge of the I.O.O.F.
Survivors are the wife, two daughters, Mrs. Karl Sieker of this city and Mrs. Leah
Nelson of Fond du Lac; one son, Marshall of this city, two brothers, Emil of Ludington,
Mich., and Hugo of this city; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from the Wattawa,
Urbanek and Schlei funeral home with the Rev. Ernest Zoerb officiating. There will
also be I.O.O.F. services. The body may be viewed from Friday afternoon to the time
of services.
