Joseph H. Traurig, Sr., familiarly known as “Joe” to every student of Lincoln
high school here he served as janitor during the past 24 years, died suddenly
of a heart attack early today. He was 68 years of age.
Enjoying apparent good health, Mr. Traurig had been at his work at the high
school as usual Tuesday. He suffered the attack before 8 o’clock this morning
at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Pat Brennan, 1311 South 10th street. He died
shortly afterward.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Pfeffer funeral home with
the Rev. Alfred Pritzl, pastor of the St. Boniface congregation, officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Born in Munich, Germany, in 1881, Mr. Traurig came to America in 1900. He worked
as a section hand for the North Western road for four years, making his home in
Cato.
In 1904 he married the former Catherine Zipperer of Whitelaw and the couple moved
to this city where Mr. Traurig was employed first at the Aluminum Goods foundry
and later at the Rahr Malting company.
With the opening of the new Lincoln high school building in January, 1924, he
gained employment on the maintenance staff, a position he had held over since.
A great favorite among students and faculty at Lincoln, “Joe” was something of
an institution at the local school where the members of each departing class
remembered his friendliness as one of the highlights of their school careers.
Surviving are his wife: six daughters, Mrs. Brennan, Mrs. Clifford Beapure, Mrs.
Ervin Meyer, Mrs. Harold Chavalia and Mrs. Frances McIntyre, all of this city,
and Mrs. Phillip K__th of Ludington, Mich.; five sons, Joseph Jr., Charles,
Herbert and Clarence, all of Manitowoc, and Robert, a senior at the Upper Iowa
State Teachers college, Lafayette, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and several brothers
and sisters in Germany.
The body may be viewed at the Pfeffer funeral home from 3 p.m. Thursday until
the time of services Friday afternoon.
