Pfc. Ralph P. Reedy, 23 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Reedy of Maribel, was killed in action on Cebu, according to a war department message received Saturday. The telegram stated that the county infantryman was killed on April 15. He is the 133rd Manitowoc county serviceman killed in the present world conflict.
Pfc. Reedy was born in the Town of Cooperstown on November 4, 1932. He attended St. James parochial school at Cooperstown and was employed on his father's farm before being called into military service. He was inducted in the Army on March 27, 1943 and after seven months of rigid training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., was sent to the Pacific area on October, 1943. He was a rifleman with an infantry regiment in the battle of Cuadalcanal which won a presidential citation for gallanty in that campaign. On Christmas Day, 1943, he arrived at Bougainville and was awarded the good conduct medal for commendable performance of duty while under Japanese sniper fire. Reedy was trained in jungle warfare in the Fiji Islands.
While on patrol duty deep in enemy territory early this year, Pfc. Reedy and men in his patrol thought they would vary their diet with fresh fish. On the fishing expedition, they stumbled over a small black native girl in her birthday suit under a rock in the jungle stream. They took the child to their camp and later released her. In addition to his parents, Reedy is survived by two brothers, Seaman First Class, Thomas Reedy, stationed in Virginia and James N. Reedy; twin sisters, Delores and Ann and another sister, Kathleen and one sister-in-law, Mrs. James N. Reedy, all of Maribel; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Petska, also of Maribel.
In memory of the late solder, a requiem memorial mass will be offered by the Rev. Walter Williams at St. James Catholic church at Cooperstown at 9 a.m. Friday.
