Ruth Melissa Smith Baird Barthel, 90, our beloved mother and grandmother, passed away Jan. 12, 2001.
She was born Sept. 18, 1910 in Draper, UT to Joseph Lauritz and Melissa Ann Fitz-gerald Smith. Ruth married Mark J. Baird in 1935; later divor-ced. Ruth's family considers her to be a most exceptional "home" maker. She was born, grew up and raised her family in Draper. She was a member of the DUP. She served faithfully in many LDS Church callings and in community activities.
She married Fritz A. Barthel in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on November 18, 1976. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1982. Ruth and her husband, Fritz, served an LDS Mission in San Bernadino, California in 1980.
Survivors: children, J. Mark Baird (Carolyn), Karl Baird (Jeannine), Claudine Greenwood (Noal), Glenda Coltrin (Bruce), Paul Baird (Teresa Pilar), Kim Baird (Doris); 22 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Esther Barthel Barrrett (J.R.), James Barthel (Barbara), Janet Gallagher (Stan); numerous step-grandchildren; sisters and brother, June Baker, Ralph Smith (Barbara), Wanda Allred (Martin), Verla Wanberg (Ken), Reva Norris ("K"); sister-in-law, Merelda Smith. Preceded in death by sisters, Celestia Ann, Erma Miller; brother, Arnold.
Funeral services Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at 12 noon in the Draper 2nd LDS Ward Chapel, 1617 E. 12700 South. Friends may call at Goff Mortuary 8090 So. State St. Thursday 6-8 p.m. and Friday at the church from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park.
