William Lewis was born to Hugh and Dorothy (Williams) Lewis on 9 April 1822 in Bodedern, Anglesey, Wales. He was baptized in the Pen Y Bryn Chapel by John Thomas on 29 April 1822. That was a Calvinistic Methodist Church at the time (Caergeiliog Chapel). Hugh Lewis reported that he was from Bodedern while Dorothy's parish before marriage was on the mainland in Llanaelhaearn, Carnarvonshire. Hugh and Dorothy also had a son named David in 1819 at the same parish. We do not know the fate of Hugh or Dorothy after the birth of William in 1822.

William Lewis married Margaret Thomas in St. Machraeth's Church in Llanfachraeth, Anglesey, Wales on 14 May 1850. The rector David Williams noted that the marriage took place after Banns were read according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church. William was listed as a weaver who lived near the Baptist church complex at Pont yr Arw. Margaret was a dressmaker who lived at "Ty Isa", transcribed as the Lower House.

Thomas and Margaret appeared in the 1851 Census in Llanfachreath. It was take in March. William was a Factory Man, age 26 and reported he was born in Bodedern. Margaret was 25, a dressmaker and reported being born in Machraeth (short form of Llanfachraeth). Their first child Charlotte was either born a few months later or in July of 1852. Their son William J. Lewis was born within a few years, but no birth records have been found for either of them.

The family came to America between 1853 and 1855. There is a record of a William Lewis entering Ohio in 1854 but we have not proven it was this family. When son William passed away in 1919 his obituary said he came to America when he was eight weeks old. Son Thomas was born on 29 March 1855 in Weathersfield Township, Ohio. Frederick was born in 1857 and baby Margaret was born in 1860. All five children were documented in the 1860 Census in Youngstown, Mahoning, OH. William was listed as a coal miner.

William disappears from all records at this point. There was a William Lewis who died in a field hospital during the Civil War and we thought Margaret may have gone to nurse him. But that William Lewis left a Pension file and having a mother elsewhere in Ohio ruled out this story. On 22 March 1869 Margaret married a John Davis.

To this day we do not know the fate of William Lewis. We owe much thanks to Archive Assistants from the Anglesey and Caernarfon Records Offices for helping us find out so much about William in Wales.
