Esther C. Kuester, age 106, formerly of Kiel, died peacefully on Sunday morning, July 1, 2012 at Plymouth Care Center, where she had resided the past 7 years. She was the former Esther C. Voland, born February 5, 1906 in the town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Fred H. & Dora (Pingel) Voland. Esther attended Rockville Grade School and was a 1922 graduate of Kiel High School. She furthered her education and graduated from Milwaukee State Normal College for intermediate grade teachers in 1924. She taught upper grades at Howards Grove Public School from 1924 to 1926 and taught the 5th grade at Kiel Public School from 1926 until 1930. In 1954 through 1960 she taught at Rockville School in the town of Schleswig and 1961 until 1962 at Woodland Park Schools. She also was a substitute teacher, mainly at New Holstein Public School. Esther and Henry J. Kuester where united in marriage on June 28, 1930 at Zion Lutheran Church. Louis Corners. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1980. The couple farmed all their married lives. Henry preceded her in death on August 31, 1997. Esther was a life long and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiel and the Ladies Aid. She also was a church librarian for many years. Esther was a very active member of the Centennial Homemakers Group and a Sewing Club in Kiel for many years. Survivors include two children: Daniel (Ruth) Kuester, rural Kiel, WI, Daryl (Mylo) Lemke, Eau Claire, WI, five grandchildren; Debra (Jon) Otto, Euless, TX, Muriel (Lee) McMullen, Fall Creek, WI, Cynthia (Kurt) Funderburg, Crystal Lake, IL, Susan Kuester, Maribel, WI, & Patricia (Brian) Lehn, St. Joseph, IL. She is further survived by eight great-grandchildren, Ashley (Andrew) Ryks, Trophy Club, TX, Whitney (Matt) Schuetz, Houston, TX, Tyler (Katie) McMullen, Altoona, WI, Breanna (Stacy) Winsand, Altoona, WI, Daniel and Benjamin Funderburg, Crystal Lake, Il., Parker & Kate Lehn, St. Joseph, IL, two great great grandchildren; Rylee and Trey Winsand, Altoona, WI, one sister, Elvira Thielen, Manitowoc, WI, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Roy Voland. Funeral services for Esther will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, July 6, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 387 Cemetery Road, Kiel with Rev. David Laabs officiating. Burial will take place in Schleswig Cemetery, town of Schleswig, (Rockville). Family and friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of service. A memorial has been established for Trinity Lutheran Church. Esther's family would like to extend their thanks to Pastor Laabs for his many visits and prayers and the nurses and staff at Plymouth Care Center for the wonderful care she received.
