Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company M, 2nd US Artillery. At Trevilian Station, Virginia, June 11, 1864, he remained at his gun, resisting the advancing Confederate cavalry, until the retreat of his detachment was secured. For courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on August 19, 1892.
