Bartel, George Joseph (Dec. 7, 1909-July 27, 1968 –husband of Catherine Steffen [married Aug. 21, 1934 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of Joseph Bartel and Theresa Leiterman –born Town of Liberty –farmer and carpenter –from March 11, 1946 to Feb. 26, 1962 owned the 150 acre farm centered at 16423 Bartel Road in Section 31, Town of Liberty –on July 15, 1959 purchased the 70 acre farm at 16632 County Highway F in Section 31, Town of Liberty from his brother-in-law Leo Steffen –on July 18, 1960 sold the 69 acres of farmland for this farm to his brother Alois Bartel –George continued to live in the house at 16632 County F until his death in 1968 –died from “asphyxiation, carbon monoxide poisoning –suicide –remained in closed garage with car running at farm home” –this first death record was later amended the have the following information added “collapse from myocardial infarction –collapsed in garage due to heart attach when car was running at his farm in Town of Liberty”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 4, Row 7, Lot 23] [marriage record Manitowoc 25-179] [death record Manitowoc 65-464]

GEORGE BARTEL

George J. Bartel, 53, of Rt. 1, Kiel, died Saturday at his home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christianson Funeral Home, Valders, and at 1:30 p.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Gregory Putzer, S.V.S., will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Bartel was born Dec. 7, 1909, in the Town of Liberty, Manitowoc County, son of the late Joseph and Theresia Leitermeas Bartel. He married Catherine Steffen Aug. 21, 1934. He was a carpenter and farmer and a member of the Holy Name Society. His wife died in March 1960.

He is survived by a son, Leo, of Manitowoc; six daughters, Mrs. Ervin (Dorothy) Edward of Mentor, Ohio, Mrs. James (Mary Ann) Leschke of Manitowoc, Mrs. Joseph (Elizabeth) Mazna of Denmark, Mrs. Michael (Agnes) Breenan of Chicago and Shirley and Lynn Ann, at home; six brothers, Joseph of rural Sheboygan, Frank and William of Milwaukee, Anton and John of Chilton and Alois of Rt. 1, Valders: four sisters, Mrs. Philomena Johns, Mrs. Marie Kriegl and Mrs. Helen Mertens, of Milwaukee, Sister Theresia of Petersburg, Minn., and 10 grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
