Miriam, always known in the family as "Melly", was born in either Canaan or Industry, Maine. The first 14 years of her life were spent in Industry, leaving for Lowell in 1874 and never to return. In 1880 Miriam was living with her parents in Lowell, working in a cotton mill. She married James "Ed" Smith on 5 Dec 1888. By 1900 the family was living in Passaic, NJ, another mill town where Ed worked as a sketchmaker. Miriam was widowed in 1919 but lived a long life until 1954
