Lester E. Gerl, age 82, formerly of 713 MacArthur Dr., Manitowoc, died Wednesday morning, March 8, 2000 at Rosebud Manor, Valders.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2000 at St Mary Catholic church, Clarks Mills. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. John Conrad with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
He was born November 1, 1917 in Manitowoc County, son of the late John and Clare Tuschel Gerl. On June 14, 1941, he married the former Veronica McCarthy, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. She preceded him in death on August 22, 1996. The couple owned and operated Gerl's Bar in Clarks Mills for ten years. Lester was then employed with Mike Wallander Construction Company until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society of the church, along with Manitowoc Eagles aerie #706 and the Knights of Columbus Council 710.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Ron Hickmann, Baldwin, Mich., Diane and Paul Isselmann, Kiel, Darlene and Robert Waniger, Clarks Mills, Vicky and Jeff Neumeyer, Metairie, La., eight grandchildren, Chris (Shawn), Colleen and Gregg Hickmann, Jeff (Karen), Jay (Susan) and Jon (Kelly) Isselmann, Jennifer (Steve) Endries, and Bobbi Joe Waniger; five great grandchildren, Kyle Hickmann, Jacob, Bailey, Zachary and Emily Isselmann; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marion Dirkmann, Michicot, Annabelle and Robert Miller, Manitowoc; a sister-in-law, Bernice Gerl, Manitowoc, Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Frances DeSales and two brothers, Harold and Herbert.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the Christianson-Deja Funeral Home, Valders, from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. by Rev. John Conrad. Friends may also call Saturday morning at St. Mary Catholic church, Clarks Mills from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 10:30 a.m.
