Charles Earl Schreck, a 30-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department who helped pioneer the use of radios in motorcycle patrols, died after a long illness Saturday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center.
Mr. Schreck, 72, was one of the department's first SWAT sergeants and served as a mentor to many current law enforcement administrators, including San Diego Police Chief Jerry Sanders.
An 18-year motorcycle patrol veteran, Mr. Schreck was a past president of the Municipal Motorcycle Officers' Association. He frequently lectured on traffic safety to San Diego students and taught traffic education at Midway Adult School.
He also was a law enforcement instructor in the San Diego Community College system.
Mr. Schreck was a recreational pilot and belonged to the San Diego Hangar of Quiet Birdmen, whose members must have at least 600 hours of flying experience.
Mr. Schreck came to San Diego in 1940 from his native Kansas and worked at Consolidated Aircraft before joining the police department in 1946. He was active for many years in Shriners activities and belonged to The Scottish Rite Bodies, San Diego Lodge No. 35 F&AM, and San Diego Elks Lodge No. 168.
Survivors include his wife, Erma; two daughters, Thelda Falbe, of Bucklin, Mo., and Stephanie Mullaly, of San Diego; two sons, David, of Panama City, Fla., and Daniel, of San Diego; a sister, Frances Beverly, of Salem, Ore.; and six grandchildren.
