Florence Belle (Harlan) Craig, 100, of Charleston passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at her home.

Florence was born on Aug. 31, 1910, in Effingham County, the daughter of John O. and Ida (Endebrock) Harlan. She married Paul Craig in 1935 and he passed away May 14, 1989.

Although they both resided in Charleston during their childhood, it was a chance meeting in Chicago at a social function where they first met. In 1947 they started their own business in Charleston that operated for 25 years.

For 25 years, she was the Avon representative for many women throughout the community — her efforts earned her numerous Avon awards, including the President's Award. Working outside her home, however, never diminished her commitment to Paul or her family. Florence was loving, caring and supportive, and everyone that knew her was blessed with her friendship. As a family member or friend, being with her was a joyous experience and it was always a pleasure to be in her company.

Florence was a lady of faith. She was active in the Women's Circle at Wesley United Methodist Church and volunteered for several projects, including the making of her famous peanut brittle for the holidays. Her most heartfelt personal contribution was her hand-made pocket crosses that have traveled all over the world.

Florence has given her family and friends a genuine gift throughout her life, but most importantly, she leaves them with memories of her living a life of love and faith and the legacy of living it everyday by example.

She is survived by two sons, Richard and Mike; two daughters, Virginia Burger and Barbara Platt; ten grandchildren, Lisa Sparrow, Paul Platt, Jennifer Burger, Craig Burger, Michelle Easter, Mark Craig, Keven Traub, Tim Traub, Tiffany Hoppe and Bill McConaghy; and telve great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Florence was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet McConaghy; two brothers; and five sisters.

Services honoring and celebrating her life was held at Adams Funeral Chapel, Charleston, with the Rev. Walter Carlson officiating.

Burial followed in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon.
