Joseph E. Johnson Spent Most Of His Life In Big Springs Community

Funeral services were held in the Big Springs Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, January 27, for Joseph E Johnson, pioneer resident northwest of Akron in Union county S. D., who passed away at his home in Riverside, California, on Sunday, January 18, 1942, after suffering a severe heart attack a few days previous. His sons, Lloyd and Stanley Johnson, and Mrs. Stanley Johnson and son, Harlow, went to California to attend the funeral of their brother-in-law, Ted Chalgren, who passed away the same day Mr. Johnson suffered the heart attack; then, after his death, they, together with his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Delia Chalgren and Mrs. Ella Anthony, accompanied the body of their husband and father back to Big Springs for interment beside the children's mother, Mrs. Eva Johnson, who passed away in the year 1930.

Joseph E. Johnson was born at Lindhult, province of Narke, Sweden, October 19, 1860. His early boyhood days were spent in his native land. While yet in his teens he came to the United States, and what was then Dakota Territory, in the year 1878. He made his home with his uncle at Big Springs at first and then went to Whiting, Iowa, where he worked for several years. On March 22, 1884, he was united in marriage with Eva M. Johnson, and this union was blessed with five children—two sons and three daughters. He established his home n the Big Springs community in 1886. Those were truly the days of the pioneers and he took his place among them with courage and fortitude. He became a successful farmer and leader in his community, filling many places of trust and responsibility. For two terms he was county commissioner, served on the school board and as supervisor of the township. For many years he was president of the Farmers Mutual Fire. Insurance Association of Union county.

In 1933 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Eva Johnson, of Riverside, Calif., who was also a former Big Springs resident. His wife and five children survive him, and all were in attendance at his burial. His children are: Mrs. Woodie Nylund, Stanley and Lloyd Johnson, of Big Springs vicinity; Mrs. Adelia Chalgren, of Riverside, Calif., and Mrs. Ella Anthony, of Anaheim, Calif. He. also leaves one sister, Mrs. Gust. Carlson, of Alcester, S. D., and four half sisters, Mrs. Arnold Ericson, of Isanti, Minn.; Miss Sophie Johnson, of Sioux City; Mrs. A. V. Peterson and Miss Hildur Johnson, of Sherwood, Ore. There are also nine grandchildren and onee great-grandchild.

He was converted June 30, 1890, and baptized, and joined the Big Springs Baptist church July 5, the same year. That was during the ministry of Andrew Johnson. From the very first he took an active interest in the work of the church. For many years he served as church treasurer and as trustee. He was a consistent Christian and a manly man, who won the confidence and esteem of all who knew him.

He retired from the farm in 1915 and moved to Riverside, Calif., where he united with the Baptist church of Riverside, holding his membership there until his death. His wife preceded him in death in 1930.

Funeral services were in charge of his old friend, Rev. R. A. Arlander, of Minneapolis, who was assisted by Rev. Peterson, of Alcester, and burial was made in the family plot in the big Springs cemetery. A full church of relatives and other friends came to pay their last respects, many from surrounding towns. Relatives from a distance were Miss Sophia Johnson, of Sioux City; Verne Ericson and family, of Inwood, la.; Rudolph Ericson and family, of Sioux Falls, and the Will Olson family, also of Sioux Falls.

He has lived a long and full life—several years over the allotted span. He will be missed by his loved ones and friends for no one can take his place in the hearts of his wife and the sons and daughters who mourn for him.

Joseph Johnson was richly endowed by nature. He had physical strength and a keen mind and he was a tireless worker. He never thought of sparing himself. He was a tender hearted and loving husband and father and a dependable friend and neighbor. Though prosperous, he remained the same unpretentious brother he was when he first gave his heart to God. He trusted implicitly in the Lord Jesus until his departure and gave comforting and assuring testimonies to this fact up to his death—a comfort to the near and dear, who can look forward to the day of reunion at the right hand of God in Glory. Peace be to his memory.
