Barstow- Donald J. Smith, 66, Barstow, died Thursday, August 17, 2000, at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Smith was born on January 31, 1934, in Moline, the son of Cleo A. and Augusta M. Smith. He graduated from Moline High School in 1952. He married June Evans on October 20, 1965. June preceded him in death on November 9, 1982.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. He was a heavy equipment operator and was a 47+ year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 537 and 150, retiring on January 19, 1996.

He was a 25-year member of Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles; a member of AARP; and the Good Sam Club.

Mr. Smith was an avid fisherman and hunter, and loved nature and the great outdoors. He built trailers as a hobby.

Survivors include a special friend and companion of many years Julia Amrine, Barstow; a sister, Nancy Byrd, Cambridge; a brother, James F. Smith, Moline; nieces, Mary "Kathy" Shore, Geneseo,Ill.; and Deanna Merkwan, Flanagan, Ill.; nephews, Marcus Byrd, Altona, Ill.; Michael Byrd, Galva, Ill.; and Larry Heimer Jr.; of Florida; and eight great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a sister, a brother, and a nephew Robert "Bobby' Smith.
