Services for The Rev. Robert J. Smith 57, pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Andalusia, and former assistant pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Moline, are 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline.
Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's with a liturgy at 7. Additional visitation will 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. Memorials can be made to Pope John XXIII Seminary, Weston, Mass.; the church; or a favorite charity.
DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, is in charge of the local arrangements.
Rev. Smith died unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec. 24, 1992, at Trinity Medical Center West, Rock Island, after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 7, 1935, in Moline, the son of Cleo and Augusta Bleyaert Smith.
He graduated from Moline High School and attended the former Moline Community College.
He was ordained in the Catholic Diocese of Peoria May 23, 1981, at the age of 45.
Prior to entering Pope John XXIII Seminary, Weston, Mass., where he received his masters degree, he was an inventory management specialist in the International Logistics Directorate at the Rock Island Arsenal. Before that he worked at Social Secretary Administration offices in Chicago and Rock Island, and, prior to that , he proudly worked for the FBI.
He was ordained as a deacon in 1976 and took care of marriages, communion, visiting the sick, and burials.
He started his duties June 15, 1883 as an assistant pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Moline. Prior to returning to Moline, he served as an assistant chaplain of St. John's Foundation for Catholic Students at the University of Illinois, Champaign.
He served at St. Mary's from 1983 until he was assigned as a pastor at St. Joseph and St. Mary churches, Pesotum, Ill., from April 1985-June 1989. At that time, he was assigned as a pastor at Sacre Coeur Church, Creve Coeur, Ill., until Dec. 1989, when he was assigned to St. Mary's Church, Utica, Ill., until his current assignment at St. Patrick's, Andalusia, in June 1992. He also had served as an associate pastor at Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal, Ill.
He was a proud Navy veteran, serving four years.
Survivors include a sister, Nancy M. Byrd, Cambridge, Ill.; brothers, Donald J. Smith, Barstow, Ill.; and James F. Smith, Moline, Ill.; nieces Mary "Kathy" Byrd, Geneseo and her fiancé Brian T. Shore, Davenport, IA.; Deana Merkwan Flannigan, Coal Valley, Ill.; and nephews Mark K. (Lori) Byrd, Oneida, and Michael K. (Lisa) Byrd, Galva.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Mary Ann., brother-in-law Billie K. Byrd, and his nephew Robert "Bobby" Smith.
Note: He will be buried beside his nephew Bobby, who was 2 when he died in a traffic accident.
