William was the son of Ambrose Dudley and Charlotte Daniels Hunt and the grandson of Robertson and Prissilla Hunt, who immigrated to Kentucky with Daniel Boone.

William's parents moved to Harrison County, Texas, about 1959. Dudley and Charlotte died of a fever one year after moving to Texas. After his parents' deaths, William, age 18, took a boat to New Orleans with his two little sisters, Annette and Amanda. From there, they took a train to Kentucky. He settled on the farm later known as the Hunt homeplace in Harrison County, Kentucky.

In 1861, William enlisted in the Confederate Army under John Hunt Morgan, a distant relative. He was imprisoned for awhile at Camp Douglas in Ohio. William was released near the end of the war, joined Morgan and eventually returned home.

On March 21, 1869, William married Elizabeth C. Botts, the daughter of Joseph and Julia Myers Botts. William and Lizzie had 11 children -- Joanna, Roy, Sidney, Willie, Taylor, Marion, Nettie, Mayme, Harriett, Amanda and Lillie. Willie and Sidney died in childhood.
