Shirley was born in Mayville, MI on April 19, 1933, daughter and fourth child of the late Harry and Esther (Bates) York. She married Bruce L. Shafer on July 18, 1959 and he preceded her in death on November 15, 2003. Shirley was a member of Davison Free Methodist Church. She served as treasurer, troop secretary and merit badge counselor of Boy Scout Troop #168. Shirley taught music for 32 years and retired from Davison Community Schools. She was active with the Ruby Red Hats of Davison, Davison Senior Center, including the chime choir, Flint Symphonic Wind Ensemble, MSU Alumni Band including Falcone Tour to Italy and volunteered at Lapeer Regional Medical Center.
Shirley is survived by her children, Ruth Shafer of South Lyon, Rebecca (David) Kennedy of Davison and Mark (Becky) Shafer of Hillman; granddaughter, Noelle Kennedy; sisters, Phyllis Bergh and Cora (Robert) Travelbee; brother, Eugene (Lorene) York; sisters-in-law, Frances Skellenger, Maxine McArthur and Darlene Smith; brothers-in-law, Harold (Roberta) Shafer and Larry Shafer; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Leland.
