Margaret was the daughter of Horace Ellsworth Porter and Ida Jane Stevens. She was born at her grandfather Thomas Doten Porter's farm on Quaker Hill in Elba, NY. Margaret was named for her dad's oldest sister, Margaret Porter Harris. She spent her childhood in Elba and nearby West Sweden, NY where her dad worked his great-aunt Charlotte Mumford Sweetman's farm. On Christmas day in 1899 she married Francis "Frank" Leroy Gephart in his hometown of Lyndonville, NY. Their first son, Burton Leroy Gephart, was born the following November in Lyndonville. Burton was named for Margaret's brother Burton James Porter and for Frank's brother Burton Gephart and known his whole life as Burt. Another son, Homer Francis was born in Sept. 1905 and died in Oct. the same year. Their marriage was apparently an unhappy one and after the death of his parents, Frank left and relocated to Saginaw, MI, where the couple divorced in 1918. Frank married Evelyn Marie Schultz three months later and never returned to NY, dying suddenly in Saginaw in 1927. It is unclear if Margaret and her son Burt ever moved to Michigan, but they were both in Lyndonville for the 1920 census and do not appear in any Michigan records, except the divorce application. Burt married Aleith Bayne in Lyndonville in 1921, the couple moving to Tonawanda, NY in the 1930's. Margaret died suddenly in her home in Lyndonville in 1939.
