Sarah was the oldest child of Horace Ellsworth Porter and Ida Jane Stevens, born on her grandfather Thomas Doten Porter's farm on Quaker Hill in Elba, NY. Sarah, always known to her family as "Sadie", was named for her mom's mother Sarah Maria Elizabetha Lentz Stevens. Sadie grew up in Elba and nearby West Sweden, NY where her dad farmed his great-aunt Charlotte Mumford Sweetman's farm. Here she became acquainted with Edward Chester Day, a widower and Civil War veteran who was nearly 32 years her senior. Sadie and Edward married 10 Mar 1894 in nearby North Bergen, NY when Sadie was 18 years old. The couple soon relocated to Casco, Allegan County, Michigan, where their oldest son Charles Edward was born in December of 1896. All 7 of their children were born in Casco, Lemuel, the youngest born 24 years later in 1920. Edward had many health issues stemming from his military service and had applied for assistance as early as 1879, but he continued to farm for many years. Their marriage was apparently turbulent, likely due to to Edward's age and infirmity. In 1910 he and sons Charles and Leland were living with Sarah's distant relation, John Laraway, by 1916 Edward was living in the Michigan Soldier's Home in Grand Rapids, where he would live off and on until his death there in 1930. The couple filed for divorce in 1916, which was denied, and would have 2 more children after reconciling. Sarah died on her farm in Ganges Township, Michigan, in 1949, outliving three of her sons.
