"Thanks to his letters we know a great deal about Matthew Hoey's colorful military career. In 1861, at the age of 16, Matthew became the first of the Hoeys to enlist in the Union Army, though he deserted the following August. In June 1863 he enlisted in the Navy under the alias "James Monahan." His enlistment papers at that time record that he was 5'8" in height, with blue eyes and brown hair. He served on board the North Carolina, the Ohio, and the Clyde, which saw action in the Florida Keys, and was discharged on September 1, 1864.

In March 1867 Matthew again enlisted in the Navy and was temporarily stationed in Portsmouth, NH aboard the sloop-of-war Vandalia. He was assigned to the frigate Minnesota, which was scheduled to sail to the Paris Exposition. Despite this, as the letters disclose, he jumped ship in July, was caught in Worcester by Natick constable Cyrus Beal, and escaped to Webster, where brother-in-law Godfrey BILLIG sheltered him and wrote Mary of his whereabouts. On August 5th Matthew HOEY again enlisted in the Army under the alias "James Ambrose" and was stationed at Camp Lowell in Tucson, Arizona Territory, where (according to his obituary) he "took part in the Indian Wars under General Wilson Miles." The sword he used at that time is preserved by great great grandson Terrence Sullivan. His uniform was also preserved but disintegrated upon exposure.

Matthew HOEY returned home in 1870 and spent the last 59 years of his life in Natick.
"Following 63 years of marriage, Matthew and Mary HOEY died within 16 months of one another, in 1929 and 1930 respectively."
