"Like many other family members, the Curwins relocated often during the 1850s and 1860s in search of employment. Ann, their eldest child, was born in Massachusetts; James was born in Connecticut, in Thompson (just south of Webster, MA). By 1856 the Curwins were in Natick, where Richard, Elizabeth and George were born; the "second" Richard (named for the first Richard who apparently died young) was born in Dudley, MA as were John Francis and Charles, where the Curwins finally settled. The 1870 census for Dudley lists James and James Jr. as working in shoe factories, while Ann worked in the woolen mills that straddled the Dudley/Webster border."

"Tragically Kate Curwin died on August 19, 1877 of typhoid fever, which had claimed brother Michael in Natick five years before. Son Richard, who died of railroad injuries in 1884, is buried with his parents at Calvary Cemetery in Webster, beneath a fine granite monument."
