On July 30, 1862, Michael enlisted in the Union Army and was assigned to the 39th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, where brother Thomas joined him in a few days. On May 8, 1864 Michael was wounded at Laurel Hill, Virginia, and was sent home for the remainder of the war. Upon his return to Natick he worked in a shoe factory and kept a saloon at the corner of Pond and South Main Sts.

In 1862 on Maryetta's birth registration Michael is listed as a "soldier".

Michael Hoey was only 37 when he died in 1872 of lingering typhoid fever. The Natick Bulletin characterized him as a man who "often manifested kind and generous impulses." He was a respected member of the St. Patrick's Benevolent Society, the Literary Associates, the Knights of Pythias, and Post 63 G.A.R., to which he "contributed liberally in time and money for the advancement of its interests." His widow Mary Kearns HOEY became proprietor of the Prescott House hotel on Union Court, where son George served as saloonkeeper. Sons Charles and Alfred operated Hoey's Drugstore on South Main Street and owned the Natick Basketball Team at the turn of the century.
