Anna W. Starnes, 89, of Grinnell died of congestive heart failure at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud, and casket bearers were Steve Seye, Sheryal Seye, Greg Taylor, Dawnette Taylor, Michael Siepmann and Jason Conn. Honorary bearers were her great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Thursday afternoon at Graceland Cemetery near Laurel.

She was the daughter of Phillip and Mary Ann Retter Bach and was born in Independence Twp., Jasper Co., Iowa & raised on the family farm in Independence Twp., Jasper Co., near Baxter, and attended rural schools.

She was married to Harold W. Starnes in Laurel in 1927. They farmed near Laurel and later operated the Standard Oil Station in Gilman. They moved to Grinnell in the early 1940s and operated Starnes and Barnes Standard Oil Company. Following her husband's death in 1956, Mrs. Starnes continued to live in Grinnell and worked as a cook at Bailey Park School and Grinnell High School.

She is survived by
four sons,
Donald and
Dennis, both of Grinnell,
Dean of Lakewood, Colo., and
Richard of Charlottesville, Va.;
and three daughters,
Jacilyn Siepmann of Des Moines,
Jeannette Lender of Brooklyn and
arol Evans of Searsboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson, four brothers and six sisters.
