I should start by saying very little information is available and different stories exist. At first I also believe she was born in South Carolina, but wondered now because of the 1790 Census. I see Griffith with three people living under his roof. A few lines above that is a Joseph Nations. If they all traveled together from England it stands to make sense they would live close by each other.
Also, the name Nation is recorded by the immigration dept. as 100% migrating from England.

Penelope and Griffith not sure where they married, but had twelve children.
