The son of Reverend George Erwin Baker Jr. and Laura "Doll" Parker Baker; born in Norfolk, Virginia, John entered the US Navy in 1940 and trained as an Aviator during WWII. He married Mary Ann Martin in 1946 and had two children, living. John's siblings were George E. Baker III, Emily Baker Hileman and Iris Francis Baker Skaggs, deceased.
