Born at Lindsay, Ontario, the oldest of five children. His parents were a Scottish immigrant, George Hope Bertram (later Member of Parliament for Toronto Center) and his wife Christina Murray from New Glasgow Quebec. John was associated with his father's hardware firm of Bertram and Co. He etered the customs employ as a hardware appraiser and was appointed Customs Officer for the Port of Toronto in 1909. In charge of the port in his thirties, he was the youngest collector every appointed. John married Martha Largetta Killer, known as Largy (Lar-gee) in Berlin, Ontario in 1895, who was daughter of a German born hardware dealer. They were parents of three sons, George, Fred and Jack. Largy died in 1935 after forty years of marriage.

John remarried 18 months later to a woman 20 years his junior, in Kentucky in 1937, and then retired to Florida. John died in 1945 two days after being hit by a car while crossing a street near his home. He was survived by second wife, Elizabeth Williamson (who lived another 33 years) who elected to bury him in Florida. All three sons were away at war, so were unable to attend the funeral, and no headstone was erected. His parents, first wife, some sibs and all three sons are buried in the family plot in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. We remain sorry he sleeps so far from those who loved him.
