Born and raised in Toronto. Son of John Hugh Bertram and Martha Largetta Killer. He was the youngest of three sons - his brothers were George, born in 1897, and Fred, born in 1907. Attended UTS (University of Toronto Schools) but left before graduation. Joined his father in the customs business. Spent several years overseas during WW2 involved in materiel supply. His war experiences seem to have been the most vivid part of his life.

Met his future wife, Charlotte Aileen Hunter because his cousins lived around the corner from her family, and the young people of both families socialized together. He married her in April of 1947 when he was 37. They had one child, a son born when he was 45. Not too interested in "family" life. Shared very little with his wife or son, although he was not an unkind man. Mostly just disengaged to the point of seeming indifferent. Customs broker right up to his death. Loved sports of all kinds. Once a tennis player. HUGE Golf enthusiast. Liked to play cards and hang out with his drinking buddies. Heavy smoker all his adult life which caused the cancer that took his life.
