The youngest of three children of Hans Hansen and Maren Laustdatter, John immigrated to New Orleans in 1852 (he spelled his surname Hanson). He built a home in Berwick in 1859, married the Danish-speaking daughter of another immigrant on 16 Feb 1860, and fathered twelve children. That home still stands today and is the oldest home in Berwick. He made his fortune building ships and selling timber from his numerous land holdings.

His obituary reads "Capn John Hanson, aged 77 years, died in Berwick, and was buried there Wednesday, the 27th. He was a veteran Pythian, and that order did the honors. The concourse at the funeral was large, many going from Morgan City."
