Emma and twin sister May were the third and fourth children born to John L. Hanson and Annie Smith. Emma married Alfred Benson in Morgan City on May 5, 1883. Emma and Alfred had four daughters: Ella, Ruth Howard, Maud Gertrude, and Annie Laurie.

The Hanson House built by Emma's father in 1858 was passed to Emma and May in 1911 and was owned by Emma's granddaughter Zelda Robicheaux in the 1940s. It is still the oldest standing home in Berwick today.
