Son of James Austin and Fannie (McKee) Austin

"In the death of James Austin, which occurred Thursday evening of last week, Cooperstown loses one of its oldest best known and most highly respected citizens. On Monday evening, December 21st, he was taken to Thanksgiving Hospital for an operation from which he seemed to rally well. Weakness of the heart, however, caused a collapse and he passed away peacefully at about 7:30 o'clock on the date mentioned. Mr. Austin was born in Pittsfield seventy-four years ago. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Harriet Krum, of Burlington, and the second Miss Adelaide Reed, of Little Falls, who with the daughter, Miss Mary E. Austin, survives him in the home circle. He is also survived by three brothers, Martin of Fairport, Samuel of Unadilla Forks and B. Frank Austin of Woodlawn, New York city. About fifty years ago the deceased and his brother, Martin, established a milk route in this village and later they were successful farmers in Exeter for years. In the 70's they entered the coal and feed business in Cooperstown at the present location of Kirby & Skinner. In April, 1880, the deceased became the partner of Dewitt Delong in the grocery business which they conducted for twenty-eight years in the store now conducted by Bailey Brothers ... The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Densley of Springfield Center officiating. Interment in Lakewood." [The Otsego Farmer & Republican (Cooperstown, NY), Jan. 1, 1909, p. 5]
