Frank “Skeeter” Newhart Sr., 90,
Wyalusing Rocket September 28, 2011

Mr. Frank “Skeeter” Newhart Sr., 90, of Camptown, PA, was taken by the Angels to Our Lord on Monday, Sept. 26, 2011. He was very proud of reaching his 90th birthday. Born in West Auburn on Sept. 18, 1921, he was the son of the late Elijah (Ike) and Emma Benninger Newhart. A 1940 graduate of the Meshoppen High School, he went on to study drafting. He had a memorable career in baseball, including being recruited by the Cleveland Indians. Frank was an outstanding pitcher and loved to share stories of his baseball days. The Batavia Clippers and Wilkes-Barre Scranton Red Barons both honored him with a “Frank Newhart Night.” After an injury ended his baseball career, he worked at a restaurant in New York City and then held various jobs in the area, including truck driving and quarry work. He and his wife, Helen also owned Newhart’s Restaurant in Wyalusing. In addition to his love of baseball, and particularly the New York Mets, Frank enjoyed golf and CNN news. One of his favorite pastimes was discussing politics with his children. He loved music, especially the singing of his children and George Jones. His favorite songs were “The Streets of Baltimore” and “The Tennessee Waltz,” which was Frank and Helen’s song. Frank and his wife, the former Helen Goodwin were recently honored by the Pennsylvania State Senate for their 68 years of marriage. They were married Aug. 8, 1942 at the United Methodist Church in Meshoppen. Frank and Helen’s family was extremely important to them, and he was endlessly proud of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild, Pop’s smiling little man. Preceding Frank in death were a daughter, Gladys Newhart in 1943, both of his parents, Elijah and Emma Newhart; brothers, Floyd, Maurice, Edward, Dennis, Carl, and Russell; sisters, Maxine, Mildred and Lucy; and a special son-in-law, Francis White. Survivors include his loving wife, Helen; daughter, Barbara Caprioli and her husband, John of Cresco, daughter, Judy Meeks and her husband, Carlton of Richmond, VA, son, Frank, Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Camptown, son, Dennis and his wife, Maria of Tunkhannock, son, John and his wife, Joanie of Tunkhannock, daughter, Maxine Bendock and her husband, Joe of Wyalusing, son, Ike and his wife, Liria of Port St. Lucie, FL, daughter, Kelly Stephens and special friend, Kenny Bodnar of Wyalusing, along with 31 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was delighted to be able to have five generations of his family together at one time. He is also survived by a brother Paul and his wife Valerie Newhart of Middletown and a sister, Vida Kone of Waverly, NY and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements are under the direction of Sheldon Funeral Homes, Main St., Laceyville. A private memorial service will be held for the family at their convenience. Any condolences can be sent to Mrs. Helen Newhart, 62 Riverside Drive #25, Wyalusing, PA 18853. The family would also like to thank the Area Agency on Aging and all the aids that have helped Dad in the past.
